JOHN FOWLER, M.D.

ABOUT ME

John was born in Pittsburgh and lived in Plum until third grade when his family moved to Erie. He attended McDowell High School, where he met his wife, Amy. John then attended Ohio State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Chemistry. For medical school, John attended Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and stayed at Temple for his Orthopaedic Surgery residency. Always wanting to return to the Pittsburgh area, John completed his fellowship training in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He accepted a position in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Pittsburgh in 2013. John is an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and was recenlty promoted to Assistant Dean of Medical Student Research. he is also the Director of Research for the University of Pittsburgh Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship program. John's main research interest is the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound for the diagnosis and treatment of hand and upper extremity conditions. He has published numerous articles on the use of ultrasound for diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome rather than nerve conduction studies. He also utilizes ultrasound for corticosteroid injections to improve the accuracy of the injections and improve outcomes.

ROBERT GOITZ, M.D.

ABOUT ME

Robert Goitz, M.D., is Professor and Chief of the Division of Hand/Upper Extremity Surgery in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UPMC. Dr. Goitz graduated from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed an orthopaedic residency at UPMC as well as a hand/upper extremity/microsurgery fellowship at the Indiana Hand Center. Dr. Goitz has been recognized as one of Pittsburgh's "Best Doctors" by Pittsburgh Magazine since 2010, America's Top Orthopaedists since 2008 and Top Doctors in America since 2005. He has published over 100 articles and chapters and lectures nationally and internationally. In addition, Dr. Goitz has extensive experience treating all aspects of congenital and pediatric hand and arm problems. He is a consultant editor for 6 scientific journals and is the Associate Fellowship Director for the UPMC Orthopaedic Hand Fellowship.

ROBERT KAUFMANN, M.D.

ABOUT ME

Dr. Kaufmann completed his bachelors in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh in 1991 and has applied this training throughout his subsequent education and research. Upon completion of his undergraduate degree, he worked as a design engineer at Hall Industries. He finished his medical school training at Temple University Hospital in 1997. He subsequently completed his General Surgery internship and Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Temple University in 2002. He gained acceptance into a fellowship in Hand, Upper Extremity and Microsurgery at the Philadelphia Hand Center in 2003. He joined the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2003. His clinical practice has been marked by high quality, cutting-edge medical care. In addition he has developed a regional reputation for treating complex trauma. A particular focus has been placed on sports injuries where he is the upper extremity team physician for The University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University athletic teams. In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Kaufmann is an extremely active educator with daily teaching responsibilities for Orthopaedic residents and fellows in Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgery. Dr Kaufmann was awarded two Golden Apple Awards in 2008 and 2017 for these efforts. He has taught hand surgery to three foreign fellows from the University of Duesseldorf and has developed a collaboration with this University. His ability to speak German fluently assists these efforts. He is a founding member of the Manus Hand Club. He has been very active and productive in research applied to Upper Extremity disorders. His research has focused on modeling the biomechanics of the wrist as well as investigating the consequences of nerve injury on hand motor control and coordination. His recent research accomplishments have focused on distal radius fracture management as well as characterizing finger joint osteoarthritis. Currently he is working on developing an elbow research project with the Orthopaedic Robotics Laboratory. He has been the Medical Director for the Monroeville Surgery Center for the past eight years. His current efforts involve guiding the day-to-day operations as Medical Director of the Monroeville Surgery Center.
